Treble made us 'rock stars': Dwight Yorke recalls Manchester United's raucous global reception after 1999 feat

If winning the first FA Cup treble in English history doesn’t put a smile on your face, then being treated like a rock star by fans across the planet may help as Manchester United hero Dwight Yorke recalls the club’s most famous year.

After an unfruitful 1998, 12 months later brought the Premier League title, FA Cup and Champions League success – making United the first English club in history to win all three.

And Yorke, who partnered three other Old Trafford goalscoring heroes Andrew Cole, Teddy Sherringham and Ole Gunnar Solksjaer, remembers the incredible reception the Reds received on their Asia and Australia tour.

"Asia in particular is just amazing," he told the club’s official website. "You talk about rock star treatment, well, that’s exactly what we get when we arrive – there are even fans waiting on the tarmac at the airport.

“Not only do the supporters come to watch the games, we get 25,000 people watching us train and a few thousand waiting outside the hotel. The fans there don't get to see the team very often so it's always a big deal when we go over."

As United unveil plans for their 2013 summer tour, Yorke attended the club’s announcement to visit Sydney – their only trip to Australia planned – and he expects the pre-season fixture to be a big success.

The former Sydney FC striker announced the tie between the Premier League leaders and the A-League All Stars.

"I’m sure they will have a great time," he added. "I went with the club in '99 and the reception we got was fantastic.

“We were very well looked after and in terms of training and hotel facilities it’s all there in abundance. Sydney is a real sporting destination.

“You only needed to see how fast the tickets sold out to see that as well – it just goes to show how passionate they are about United and football."
