Review: James Morrison @ Manchester Apollo – January 31

Filling the Manchester Apollo up with ease is a credit to one of the country’s most successful singer-songwriters of the moment. James Morrison takes refuge in Manchester for two nights of distinctively amiable shows, and from tonight’s response, the rest of the tour is set to be a triumphant success.

Having Rainy Boy Sleep warm up the mixed audience earlier on, the stage was set for a lustrious affair of guitar strings, gruff love and adoration.

Surpassing the talented likes of James Blunt and Paolo Nutini, as an artist that is able to fuse modern pop with a sense of individual influences, James Morrison had an exceptional night in front of the Apollo’s crowd. His third album ‘The Awakening’ debuted at number one and it’s a reluctantly sombre dedication to his inner soul.

Tonight the Rugby-born musician opened with Beautiful Life which is the kind of song that fits comfortably between a walk in the sunshine and a basket of puppies: it’s delightfully pretty.

Next on the agenda was an insight into the artist’s emotional turmoil of losing his father with In My Dreams. The poignant performance had the crowd encouraging Morrison with ardour. His guitar playing was immaculate, his vocals were enough to raise the hairs on necks and combined, the two were elevating.

Morrison played a catalogue of hits, much to the audience’s delight; the piercing screams and whistles mirrored a Sweet Sixteenth. Broken Strings, Up and One Life rallied the Apollo’s audience to embrace the moment, yet Morrison never edged too close to succumbing to success. His charismatic presence was endearing as he shifted from a true sense of sincerity as a songwriter with Precious Love, to bounding down the ear drums as a vocalist in You Give Me Something.

It was a professional’s game tonight and the talent within this fantastic musician needs no double-take. He was overwhelmed by his fan’s response and returned the affection with an exultant display.
