‘Must-win games are beyond me’: Keith Hill relaxed about visit of promotion rivals Oxford United

Rochdale manager Keith Hill has played down the significance of his side’s home game against fellow promotion-chasers Oxford United today.

The U’s may be managerless, after Chris Wilder left them for struggling Northampton Town last month, but they remain in fourth place just two points behind third-placed Dale.

Although Hill accepted the importance of the match he was quick to deny that the game was critical for his team.

“People talk about big games, must-win, must-not-lose, well that is all beyond me,” Hill told the Dale Player.

“The psychological impact that the media can make, that the supporters can make it can be a negative as well as a positive.

“It seems to me that as a country whatever industry we’re in we want to pick up on a negative we’re a very negative orientated country at this moment and we want to draw on people’s non-achievements.”

Presently occupying an automatic promotion place in League Two, Dale are well and truly in the hunt for promotion but Hill also insisted his side have nothing more to prove this season.

“We’ve already achieved everything I expected us to this season we’ve made money, we’re developing players and we’ve had success on the pitch,” he added.

“I can’t look into the future; you can’t look into the future within a game, never mind a sequence of games.

“All I know is we are in good form and we’re looking forward to the game.”
