Arsenal of guns, machetes and knuckle dusters used by Manchester thugs to defend ‘turf’ seized by police

By Scott Hunt

An arsenal of guns, rifles, knives, machetes and knuckle dusters were seized yesterday by Manchester police – weapons believed to be used to defend criminals’ ‘turf’.

Police say the raid, which also uncovered ammunition, drugs and stun guns, is a step towards reclaiming Manchester’s streets back from drug dealers and criminals.

The terrifying arsenal was discovered in a raid on Louisa Street, Halliwell, at around 12.20pm.

Inspector Wayne Readfern said: “It is so important the community stand up against drug dealers and criminals as their neighbourhood belongs to them, not the criminals who think it is their ‘turf’. And thanks to the information we received, we were able to execute these warrants and recover an arsenal of weapons and drugs.”

The operation was carried out in response to concerns of local residents regarding drug dealing in their area.

“With these weapons off the street, it means the community is much safer,” said Inspector Readfern.

A 51-year-old man and 26-year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of possession of class A drugs.

A 25-year-old man and 25-year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of possession of a class B drug and breach of the peace.

All have been bailed pending further inquiries.

Inspector Readfern said: “I would encourage people who have any evidence or suspicions about drug dealing to come and tell us, in confidence if needed, and we will continue to clean up this community.”

Police are encouraging anyone with any information to call them on 101, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
