Roberto Martinez believes that the deadline day signings of Albert Crusat, Shaun Maloney and Patrick van Aanholt will boost the club’s Premier League chances.

But while Martinez is happy with the signings made, he expects more to be made in January when other players will be available.

The Spaniard said: “With the needs we have, I just feel we'd be better off keeping the loans until January - that's going to be more beneficial to us.

"There are certain players who haven't become available yet who could be on the market in January, and it could work in our favour to have at least one loan up our sleeve should we need it."

With Crusat signed the day before the deadline, Martinez snapped up Celtic midfielder Maloney for a fee of around £1 million and Chelsea full-back van Aanholt.

Maloney – who also had a spell with Aston Villa under Martin O’Neill – joins on a two-year deal, with the option for a third.

The Scotland international said: “I spoke with the manager in the days leading up to the move and I suppose that is what made me realise that this was the right move for me.

“It was a tough decision leaving Celtic. I grew up with the club and returned for a second spell not too long ago, but after speaking with both clubs I feel the time was right for the move.

“It's a Premier League club with big ambitions which was really appealing to me and the Manager was so positive when I was speaking with him that you can't help but want to play, train and work hard under him."

Van Aanholt became the third player to arrive at the DW when Martinez signed the 21-year-old on a season-long loan.

Martinez said: “Patrick is a player with enormous potential. Technically he is very gifted, very comfortable in possession and physically, he uses his intensity to defend very effectively.”
