‘Fergie wouldn’t have done any better’: David Moyes defiant after Manchester United’s loss to Liverpool

By John McDougall

Though losing to Liverpool at Anfield is never easy for Manchester United to stomach, boss David Moyes believes Sir Alex Ferguson wouldn’t have done any better.

The Premier League champions lost to Daniel Sturridge’s early first-half header, but dominated large swathes of the second period but were unable to get an equaliser.

And the 50-year-old Glaswegian doesn’t believe the scoreline would have been any different had Britain’s most successful manager been in his shoes.

“I always knew it was going to be a tough ask,” Moyes told United’s official website. “No matter if Sir Alex Ferguson was sitting here playing these games.”

Moyes preferred to look on the bright side of United’s performance, despite him still searching for his first triumph over Liverpool at Anfield.

“I thought we played very well from the start,” he explained.

“We gave away a bad goal in the opening few minutes but, with the exception of that, it was probably the best we have played this season.

“We just didn’t quite have the last bit which would have enabled us to score. It wasn’t for the want of trying. It wasn’t for the amount of forward players on the pitch to try and get them to score that’s for sure.

“We dominated the game for long periods without us having the final ball or cross and, when we did get them, it just didn’t quite fall for us.”

The Red Devils were without Wayne Rooney, who stayed at home thanks to a head injury sustained with Phil Jones in training.

The result leaves United seventh in the Premier League, five points behind early pace-setters Liverpool, who have a 100 percent record so far this campaign.

Though disappointed with United’s points tally, Moyes feels his side have come out of their opening clashes with Swansea City, Chelsea and Arsenal in reasonable shape.

“It’s undoubtedly a very big fixture for both clubs andChelseawas also a very big fixture,” Moyes said.

“I think we’re coming out of these three games with not as many points as we’d like but have shown we’re in reasonably good shape.

“It’s maybe a little unjust that we are not up there towards the top of the championship.”
