Manchester United's Michael Carrick and Patrice Evra to make room for Shinji Kagawa and Alex Buttner in FA Cup tie

Powering Manchester United’s seven-point cushion at the summit of the Premier League table will earn regulars Patrice Evra and Michael Carrick a break during this weekend’s FA Cup third round.

England midfielder Michael Carrick has not been rested since their 3-1 victory over QPR on November 24 – which ended his run of 39 consecutive league starts – but will be rested for the Reds’ trip to West Ham.

And with Evra’s understudy Alex Buttner raring for first-team experience, Sir Alex Ferguson will utilise the chance to rotate his squad – having used 19 players during their fruitful festive season of three wins and one draw.

“We'll make a few changes for the cup tie,” the Scot told MUTV. “Obviously, the likes of Evra and Carrick – who I took off in the second half as soon as we got the third goal – probably deserve a break.

“They've been playing all the games so we'll have a look at the situation.

“We've got fresh players, though. Young Shinji Kagawa came on against Wigan and Tom Cleverley is fresh as he's not had a lot of football – he’s shown a great appetite just now, though.

“We've got plenty of players we can freshen up with.”

The Reds have not lifted the FA Cup since 2004 and must travel to Upton Park in their first fixture of the competition.

Sam Allardyce’s men secured a vital 2-1 win against Chris Hughton’s Norwich yesterday and continued their chase for a top-half finish in their return to the Premier League.
