I'm only as good as my 'special' team: Manchester United's Robin van Persie reveals secret of emphatic debut season

By Dean Wilkins

With 19 goals to his name after just half of his debut Manchester United season, Robin van Persie heaped praise on his ‘special’ teammates for his on-field triumphs.

The flying Dutchman netted a brace during their 4-0 thumping of Greater Manchester rivals Wigan Athletic yesterday – Javier Hernandez grabbed the other two – and continued his scintillating form into the New Year.

The £24million man’s first goal was the pick of the bunch after wonderfully dropping his shoulder and rounding Ivan Ramis before curling a shot exquisitely past Ali Al Habsi.

And even Van Persie, who is earning a reputation for being Old Trafford’s new Ruud van Nistelrooy, admitted his joy at completing a team move.

"This is a special team," said Van Persie. "Everybody wants to help each other. Everybody's keen for everyone to score.

"Defenders are working their socks off for the midfielders, the midfielders are working for the strikers. Everybody wants to run and everybody has one target in their mind.

"It was a good goal because every single touch was the right one.”

And with his United career off to a bang, Van Persie’s success is even enticing Sir Alex Ferguson – who celebrated his 71st birthday on New Year’s Eve – to extend his time in Manchester,

"I'm hoping to stay on for a bit of time," he told Abu Dhabi Sports.

"We knew we were getting a top player who would make a difference to the team, that is why we went for him.

"Robin is a completely rounded footballer. He has great international experience, he's played for Arsenal for seven years and he came to us at the very peak of his career.

"His ability to make and take goals is fantastic.

"His play for his first goal was absolutely magnificent, his turn, his balance, no drawback, just side footed it in. It was a really good goal."
