Salford City Reds face points penalty after fielding 14 men in Castleford Tigers win as Darrel Griffin checks-in

By Mark Shales

Salford City Reds are facing a possible Super League points deduction after the RFL charged them for briefly fielding 14 men during Saturday’s win over Castleford Tigers.

There is no precedent for Castleford being awarded points but the Reds may be hit with a hefty fine at a disciplinary hearing on Wednesday May 8.

The result lifted Salford off the foot of the table, and following a Challenge Cup victory over the University of Gloucestershire All Golds, ensured first back-to-back wins this season for the Reds.

A spokesperson for the club said: “We are communicating with our coaching staff, the players involved and the RFL to establish the sequence of events during last weekend’s round.

“We will, of course, be assisting the RFL tribunal in any way possible, but at this point in time cannot comment further.”

The incident occurred when a Reds replacement stepped out at the Salford City Stadium turf before prop Darrell Griffin had left the pitch.

The former Leeds Rhinos forward had been at Salford on a three-month loan from the Champions, but signed a three-and-a-half year deal on Wednesday to remain at the club.

The 31–year-old becomes the second signing for new head coach Brian Noble following an agreement to bring in Sale Sharks youngster Jordan Davies.

And the Oxford-born former England international admitted he was delighted to be part of the Dr Marwan Koukash revolution at Salford.

“I’ve been really impressed with the club and the people here since I arrived eight weeks ago,” he told his club’s website.

“It’s clearly a club and a team travelling in the right direction and I have enjoyed my time here immensely so far.

“Since I arrived we have been improving on the field and starting to get results and we have only really had one game when we were blown away against Widnes.

“With the appointment of Brian Noble who has such a history of success in the game it means there are great times ahead here – the potential of the place is huge.

“If we continue to build, in a few years we could be among the strongest in the game which would be excellent not just for Salford but for Super League as a whole.”
