London calling? Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere says luring Rooney from Manchester United would be ‘amazing’

By Marios Papaloizou

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has added to the mounting speculation surrounding the future of unsettled Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney.

Rooney reportedly asked to leave Old Trafford at the end of last season and rumours are circulating that Arsenal are interested in acquiring the United star’s talents.

Speaking in an interview with ESPN, Wilshere said: “If it happens, it would be amazing.”

“He is the type of player who can win you trophies – and just to see his name on the team sheet brings fear to the opposition. We could do with a little more of that.”

New United manager David Moyes is apparently keen to ensure Rooney remains at the club.

Having officially started work at United yesterday, it seems that Moyes’ first challenge will be to fight off interest from the Gunners and convince Rooney to stay.

The two are set for showdown talks today and it has been suggested by a source close to the impending discussions that the odds are ‘60-40’ in favour of the 27-year-old ending his nine year spell with United.

Former United defender Gary Neville has added to the debate on Rooney’s future by stating that: “I would never recommend anyone leave Manchester United because I believe it to be a great stage to play football.”

If Rooney does depart Old Trafford a bidding war between the two Manchester clubs for Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski may commence.

Lewandowski is expected to leave Dortmund this summer and has been heavily linked with a move to the Etihad, however the Polish star is also a long term United target.
