Bolton Wanderers’ Jay Spearing upbeat after Blackpool draw – but promises more against Birmingham

By Scott Hunt

Bolton Wanderers are still without a win this season after a 0-0 draw against Blackpool last night – yet midfielder Jay Spearing is remaining upbeat.

The result leaves Bolton second from bottom in the SkyBet Championship and still without a league victory this season.

Yet Spearing was happy with the performance of his team in securing a much-needed point.

“We came to Blackpool knowing it would be a tough test,” he said.

“We got our game going and we played some good stuff throughout the game.”

“We are happy with the result. We created a lot of opportunities to see the game off but things didn’t fall our way.”

In an even game, both sides had 13 attempts on goal and both had good scoring opportunities to win the match.

Bolton manager Dougie Freedman gave debuts to new loanees Neil Danns and Kevin McNaughton and a first start for Liam Feeney.

Feeney impressed throughout, causing Blackpool trouble down the right wing but the chances were not converted and the match ended goalless.

Once again though Bolton failed to capitalise on their chances to score as their goal-shy forwards again missed numerous opportunities.

It was though a first clean sheet in 15 games for Bolton, stretching back to April against Wolves.

Spearing and his team now turn their attention to Saturday’s televised clash with Birmingham City.

“We put Blackpool under a lot of pressure and that is exactly what we will do on Saturday against Birmingham,” Spearing said.

“We are staying as a unit and we will start pushing up the league.”
