Betting on Fergie’s return to managing Manchester United? You’re throwing money down drain, says Sir Alex

By Sean Butters

Sir Alex Ferguson has rubbished rumours of a return to managing Manchester United despite bookies slashing odds on him regaining the reins after the worst season start in 24 years.

Instead, the former Reds boss reiterated Sir Bobby Charlton’s message – that the Manchester United boardroom has faith in David Moyes.

The comments from the club’s hierarchy will no doubt be a much-needed boost for Moyes after Sunday’s home defeat left United 12th in the league.

Responding to the revelation that bookies have slashed odds on the former manager returning to the club after United’s unsteady start to the new era, Sir Alex backed his compatriot unequivocally in an American television interview.

“I’m not interested in managing again or getting myself worked up about United’s results,” the 13-time Premier League winner said on the PBS show. “United are in good hands with David Moyes. He will be fine. He’s a good manager.”

Sir Alex amassed a total of 38 trophies in 26 years at Old Trafford, an unprecedented run of success.

Despite the obvious faith in his successor, some fans are more sceptical, a feeling that has translated over to the bookmakers, who are giving odds on Sir Alex’s retirement ending prematurely.

However, the Scot moved quickly to quash the rumours.

“You would be throwing your money down the drain if you put any money on me coming back as manager,” said the 71-year-old. “I made my decision. The timing was perfect. There is no way back for me now.”

Rather than pining for a return to the career that spanned 17 years as a player and 39 in management, Sir Alex is revelling in his newfound freedom.

“I’ve got a new life,” he said. “I want to go the Kentucky Derby and the US Masters, the Melbourne Cup. I want to visit vineyards in Tuscany and France.”
