‘The reality is we’re fourth from bottom’: Wanderers looking up the table as former Magpie Shola flies in

Neil Lennon is looking for his Bolton side to head into the international break on a high with a positive result away at Queens Park Rangers.

Wanderers are yet to register a single point on their travels, but head to Loftus Road looking to capitalise on what is likely to be a nervy QPR team following their 4-0 derby defeat to Fulham last time out.

And, aside from the horror-show at Huddersfield, Lennon feels his side acquitted themselves well in September, but lying at the wrong end of the table, the push for points is becoming increasingly important.

“If we can get a result at the weekend it’s not been a bad month for us really,” Lennon said.

“Although we feel we could and should be in a better position than what we are, the reality of it is that we are fourth from bottom.

“Some managers say they don’t have a look at the league table, but you always have a wee look at it and think where a couple of wins could get you.

“It’s still very tight at the minute, and you obviously don’t want to be set adrift from the rest, so a couple of wins would do everyone here a world of good.

“Our level of performance away from home has been very bitty, so we need to put two halves together and hopefully we can come away with a positive result.”

Off the field, Lennon’s seemingly interminable search for a striker looks like it might be nearing a positive conclusion, with former Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi currently on trial at the Macron.

Having made over 300 appearances for the Magpies, the capture of Ameobi would be a coup, and Lennon is hoping that, alongside Emile Heskey, the striker can give everyone at the club a lift despite their advancing years.

“Obviously he’s a player who’s played at the highest level for a consistent period.

“We had it with Heskey and Eidur Gudjohnsen last year, it lifted the dressing room, and Shola is still a big name in the game.

“You mention his name anywhere and people will know of him.

“I wish I could wind the clock back ten years – but both feel, and we feel, that they’ve got a lot to offer.

“Shola’s a little bit younger than Emile – I think everybody is these days in football – but Emile has got great quality still and I think Shola’s young enough still to certainly play at a decent standard.”
