I was right to sub Carlos: Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini booed as Tevez hurled off in Everton draw

Boos rang around the Etihad Stadium when Carlos Tevez was substituted in Manchester City’s draw against Everton, but Roberto Mancini insists he made the right decision.

The Blues were threatening to snatch a win after Tevez levelled up from the penalty spot just before half-time in reply to Marouane Fellaini’s close-range effort.

The Argentinian looked lively in the second period – almost scoring with a header flashed over the bar – until Mancini saw fit to introduce Sergio Aguero as his replacement.

“I have my reason. There are a lot of reasons,” the Italian said.

“They could score only on set-pieces or crosses so I needed one tall player who can also attack and help defenders. If I took off Edin we would have big problem with set pieces.

“Edin deserved to play but Carlos played well too.”

Mancini praised Everton’s stout defending but felt his side should still have emerged victorious –despite a gruelling week in which they have also played Chelsea and Wigan Athletic.

He added: “I thought it was our game. First half we went down and it was difficult but every game against Everton is.

“We tried and tried, and this week we played three games in six days which can be tiring.

“But in that second half they did nothing. First half they crossed four or five times but they defend very well, every time with ten men – they are the best team when they do this.”
