Last orders at Eden: Bar closes in ‘general downturn’ of Gay Village

A popular bar in Manchester’s famous Gay Village has had to close its doors for good, causing the loss of 18 jobs.

Located on the fringe of the Rochdale Canal, Eden is renowned for its food menu of local produce and for having a barge on the water where customers can sit while they eat or drink.

The bar was taken over by SDB bars in 2012, and subsequently endured a general downturn of trade in the area.

Steven Wiseglass, an Insolvency Practitioner for accountancy practise Inquesta, was appointed liquidator for SDB.

Mr Wiseglass said ‘Eden Bar suffered from a general downturn of trade in the area’, which had been affecting the Village in general over recent years.

He said that nearby excavation work made it difficult to access the bar, and customers began to disappear after it was left ‘virtually marooned by a building site next door’.

“It is unfortunate that SDB Bars could not continue trading, and sadly there have been 18 redundancies as a result of the closure of Eden Bar,” he added.

Eden opened in 2002 and according to its website, prided itself on having ‘a reputation for combining quality food, exceptional service and a fantastic atmosphere’.
