A Stockport man has been charged following a good Samaritan being left in a critical condition after he was dragged along the M602 by his own stolen van.
Michael Keary, of Barlow Lane, North Reddish Stockport, has been charged with section 18 wounding, aggravated vehicle taking, two counts of failing to stop after a collision and failing to provide a specimen of breath.
The incident happened at around 8.30am on Sunday March 1, which is also the date of Keary’s 43rd birthday, on the M602 slip road just outside Salford, where a lorry overturned.
The 28-year-old victim saw what had happened and selflessly pulled over to assist the supposed ‘crash victim’, leaving his keys in the ignition of his VW Caddy.
A man callously took advantage of his victim’s kindness and jumped into the Caddy driver’s van before taking off down the motorway with his helper still clinging on.
The unnamed victim remains in hospital with a fractured skull but is making good progress.
Keary will appear before Manchester and Salford Magistrates’ Court today.
