Thugs leave man, 28, needing stitches after brutal unprovoked Salford street attack in front of girlfriend

By Neil Robertson

A man needed stitches after being brutally attacked with a bottle in front of his girlfriend in Salford last week.

The unprovoked attack happened on Great Clowes Street on Wednesday at about 10.30pm when the man and his girlfriend were walking home from the shops.

Four men pushed the man, 28, against a wall and a broken beer bottle was smashed against the back of his head.

Detective Constable Andrew Munden said: “This was a completely unprovoked attack on a man who was simply walking home from the shops with his girlfriend, minding his own business.

“This attack happened on a relatively busy road and I would urge any witnesses to call us about this as soon as possible.”

The pair, who speak little English, were walking home when the four men made what was understood to be an offensive comment towards the man’s girlfriend.

Although he carried on walking, he was still attacked.

The man’s girlfriend, 30, managed to pull him away as the victims ran off.

He was taken to hospital where he needed stitches to a number of cuts to his head, while the attack also aggravated an existing leg injury.

The attackers were between 25 and 35-years-old, three were white, one of whom was wearing a red jumper, and one man was black.

Anyone with any information should call police on 0161 856 5351 or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
