Review: Cocktail masterclass @ The Alchemist, Spinningfields, Manchester

By Natasha David-Hilton

If imitation really is the sincerest form of flattery then the guys at The Alchemist must be feeling pretty good about themselves.

The bar which prides itself on innovation and show-stopping drinks has had everything from signature cocktails to their name copied.

It seems, however, that they are taking it all in their stride insisting – people will always want the original.

But if you too have ever wondered about those giant balls of ice in their drinks or how exactly to make that perfect cocktail then The Alchemist is willing to share their secrets with you… although not all of them.

The Cocktail Masterclass showcases three classics – their signature Smokey Old Fashioned, the Passionfruit Mojito and the French Martini.

AND FOR THIS YOU WILL NEED… ONE SAUCEPAN: Rustling up the passionfruit mojito

A dedicated mixologist guides you through the history of each drink and after a rather mesmerising display of bartending magic you then get to drink each cocktail. What could be better?

The Smokey Old Fashioned is the brainchild of The Alchemist – although you will find many imitations around the city.

And when a drink has to be made using a smoke gun, you know it’s going to be good.

With Woodford Reserve, maple syrup, Jerry Thomas’ Bitters, oak woodchip smoke and an ice ball, this is a cocktail that could convert anyone to a bourbon whiskey drinker.

Listed on their normal menu under ‘all things fun with rum’ the Passionfruit Mojito is tangy, sweet and beautifully refreshing.

The cocktail is served long with half a passionfruit and even a little spoon so that you can dive right into those delicious pips.

Made with Bacardi Superior Rum, passion fruit syrup, fresh passionfruit, lime juice and mint, it’s easy to see why this gem made it into the masterclass.

The French Martini needs little introduction. But as always The Alchemist has managed to improve a classic with one of their special twists.

As well as the standard Russian Standard Vodka, Chambord and cranberry juice, the ever playful mixologists have added creamy pineapple foam and sharp raspberry dust.

The result is not only a great tasting cocktail but one that turns heads as it makes its way to your table.

By the end of the masterclass you might not be quite ready to join The Alchemist’s team of mixologists but you will be ready to wow your family and friends with your ability to effortlessly rustle up three tasty and incredible looking cocktails.

And if that wasn’t enough The Alchemist have now teamed up with Hey Little Cupcake! to bring cocktail and cupcake masterclasses – anyone for caketails?
