Trafford Lib Dem leader Ray Bowker expects national politics to impact on local election performance

Raymond Bowker MBE, Liberal Democrat leader in Trafford, believes national politics will impact on his party’s performance in the local elections tonight.

The Lib Dems suffered in local elections in 2011 and Bowker is hopeful of bucking that trend and holding onto his Village seat, which he has held for the last 25 years.

He also believes that the expected low turnout is due to national apathy with politics.

He said: “I'm hopeful of keeping my seat.

“It’s difficult to assess and I think public reaction to national Lib Dem politics might affect us locally. Last year we lost a Lib Dem seat to Labour.

“I put people and the environment before politics. I always have and always will. I hope people appreciate that.

"I think it's due to public apathy about politics. The interest doesn't seem to be there anymore.

“People don't know what to believe or who to believe anymore. It's not an easy task but it can be done."
