Lancashire fast bowler James Anderson is rested for third test against West Indies

Lancashire fast bowler James Anderson will miss England’s third Investec Test against the West Indies after he was rested from the 12-man squad.

Burnley-born Anderson, 29, who has 258 test wickets, is the only omission from the squad that sealed the series against the tourists at Trent Bridge last month.

Geoff Miller, national selector, believes Anderson – who has been carrying a minor thigh injury – will need the rest ahead of a potential world ranking deciding series against South Africa later this summer.

He said: “James Anderson will miss this Investec Test as we look to manage his workload ahead of a busy period of cricket this summer and beyond, a decision which is in the best interests of the team and James himself.

“We have been made to work hard for our two victories so far and are delighted to have secured the series, however we know that we will need to continue to play some good cricket if we want a third win against the West Indies this week.”

The England squad for third Investec Test, starting on Thursday, June 7, at Edgbaston:

Andrew Strauss (Middlesex) (Captain), Jonny Bairstow (Yorkshire), Ian Bell (Warwickshire), Tim Bresnan (Yorkshire), Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire), Alastair Cook (Essex), Steven Finn (Middlesex), Graham Onions (Durham), Kevin Pietersen (Surrey), Matt Prior (Sussex), Graeme Swann (Nottinghamshire) and Jonathan Trott (Warwickshire).
