There’s something about Rooney: Top players pleading for Manchester United’s wantaway Wayne

By Marios Papaloizou

Wayne Rooney seems to be the Premier League’s wanted man.

Players from two of the league’s top clubs are locked in a tug-of-war battle over the Manchester United striker.

Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech added his voice to the Rooney saga when he said he could see him in a Chelsea shirt.

Yesterday, Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere also said that signing Rooney would be ‘amazing’

Although no bids have been revealed it is believed that Arsenal have already had a £20million offer rejected for Rooney.

While Chelsea are not thought to have opened negotiations with United it is widely acknowledged that they are in the market for a striker and have a shortlist of three names.

Rooney is thought to be top of that list due to his Premier League experience, however Borussia Dortmund’s Robert Lewandowski and Napoli striker Edison Cavani are also being considered.

Former Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan spoke candidly to the BBC about the Rooney situation.

“You can put the first one [transfer request] down to inexperience but the second one is putting yourself right out there,” he said.

“Wayne is at the greatest club you can be at. Why would you want to jeopardise that, unless you want a fresh challenge and you feel that challenge isn’t being met at Manchester United.”

The striker reported for pre-season training at United’s AON training complex this morning and showdown talks with David Moyes regarding his future are expected.

However, with Rooney’s future in the balance it appears that the Premier League’s top players are doing all that they can to ensure that the England striker lines up with them in the new season.
