Thousands expected for Bury funeral of brave firefighter Stephen Hunt, killed in Northern Quarter blaze

By Danielle Wainwright

The funeral of a firefighter who was killed in the Northern Quarter blaze in July will be held today at 11am with thousands expected to pay their respects to the dad-of-two.

Stephen Hunt, 38, died as he tackled the fire at Paul’s Hair World on Oldham Street as he became enveloped by a sudden surge of extreme heat that took the officers inside the building by surprise.

The funeral will take place at Bury Parish Church and in accordance with the wishes of his family, a ceremonial fire service funeral is being held followed by a private family-only committal.

Roads surrounding the church will close with the public invited to line the route of the cortege as the service is broadcast using loudspeakers.

The cortege will then make its way down Bolton Street and into the town centre at around 10.50am with his fire service colleagues forming a Guard of Honour along the route.

Stephen’s coffin will then be carried into the church where a service will be held until approximately 11.45am.

Road closures will be in place from 09:30am.
