Tottenham launched audacious deadline-day bid to re-sign Manchester United's Dimitar Berbatov, claims agent

Tottenham Hotspur were close to sealing an audacious move for former striker Dimitar Berbatov on transfer deadline day claimed the ex-Manchester United player’s agent.

The 31-year-old sealed a £5million deal with Fulham on Friday, but he was on the verge of travelling back to his former side – who sold him for £30million four years ago.

Sir Alex Ferguson hinted that the out-of-favour Bulgarian he could be bound for White Hart Lane and Barbatov’s agent Emil Danchev confirmed that the clubs were in talks.

"We were in touch with Tottenham at the last moment," Danchev said.

Berbatov provoked allegedly broke promises with Fiorentina and Juventus about joining the Serie A sides to stay in the Premier League – and his agent revealed that they were not the only clubs interested in the forward.

"I cannot make promises on behalf of my client whoever they might be because my work principle is to create opportunities and options," Danchev added.

"The choice belongs to the person who makes the decision. We discussed all three options. Nobody promised anybody anything.

"Fiorentina had a desire to get Dimitar to sign with them. We went as far as negotiating all conditions.

"But other than that, I've also spoken with three Turkish clubs, three Italian clubs, three English clubs, and three German clubs."
