McClean the Menace: Wigan think Irish forward could be the answer to club’s woes

Irish international James McClean made a huge impact against Nottingham Forest in midweek and could be just what Wigan Athletic need to kick-start their season.

Uwe Rosler’s side held undefeated Forest to a 0-0 draw on Tuesday night and despite a lack of goals, Wigan began finding their feet to give their opponents a hard time.

McClean was a key energetic ingredient in attack and has been heavily complimented ahead of the away trip to Wolves on Saturday where Wigan need goals to give the under-par side, currently a place above the relegation zone, a timely boost.

Defender James Perch said: “James will get goals this season with the pace and quality that he’s got, when he’s 100% he will be a real menace in this league.”

McClean has recently returned from injury but looks set to return to full fitness in the very near future after giving Forest the run-around.

The25-year-old has, however, highlighted that to rack up the points Wigan must perform with the same energy and drive they are capable of showing in every game.

“There are no easy games in this league but, with the quality we have here, we should be winning games,” said McClean.

“The goals will come, I truly believe that, and when they do we just have to make sure we sure up at the back as well and start putting wins together.”

Manager Rosler was also impressed by the desire and determination Wigan displayed at the DW Stadium and is hopeful ahead of the trip to Molineux.

“First and foremost, what was good for me was that we were on the front foot, we competed better in midfield, won more balls and we were driving forward.

“I’m happy. I want to build on that performance. Hopefully we’ll recover quickly and on to Wolves.

“We have to improve our away record, there’s no question about that and Wolves are a top team. But it will suit us going into the game as underdogs because my players thrive on that challenge.”
