The Manchester College unveils 2020 vision to be education leader for city

The Manchester College has announced ambitious plans to become a national leader in education in the next five years.

They have put together a new strategy called ‘College 2020’ which aims to provide the best education and training for students across a range of careers.

The new initiative comes at the same time as other factors that have had an impact on education in Greater Manchester such as the area review, devolved government and the Northern Powerhouse.

The Manchester College Principal Lisa O’Loughlin said: “An important part of our mission is to inspire people from all backgrounds and change their future for the better.  When our students join us, we will provide them with the opportunities, experiences and support they need to ensure they are work-ready when they leave us.

“We need to be able to respond to the changing needs of the skills market in Greater Manchester and our new strategy will allow us put the structures in place to support the region’s skills priorities. We want to provide careers, not courses, to help our students ultimately get the career they aspire to.

“Part of the new strategy is to move to Centres of Excellence, which will provide greater learning opportunities and environments for students, staff and employers. Through Centres of Excellence, the college can provide specialist courses to meet current and future skills shortage areas, and there are exciting plans emerging for a new campus in the heart of the city.

She added that study at a Centre of Excellence gave students the best links with industry and would help them become ready to join Greater Manchester’s job market.

The Manchester College has courses in vocational sixth form education, A-levels, apprenticeships, work-based learning, foundation learning, adult education, higher education, and corporate training.

The college also hopes to increase its reputation as an attractive place to work in the education sector, and of course as a strong source for employers to look for new staff.
