Saving-face brace earns Wayne Rooney Manchester United fans' Man of the Match vote after Reading thriller

Wayne Rooney has stormed to fans' Man of the Match vote after his vital double helped to save Manchester Unite's blushes against Reading on Saturday.

The England striker converted from the spot and tapped in a teasing square ball from Patrice Evra to help the Reds come from behind twice to beat Reading in a 4-3 thriller on Saturday.

And despite in-form Anderson and Robin van Persie helping United hold on to their place at the Premier League summit, Rooney stormed to 81% of the vote to fend off competition.

Rooney pushed his goal tally up to five for the season and was restrained from clinching his hat-trick after helping to maintain control in the middle of the park.

"I'm sure for the coaches and fans watching it was agonising," Rooney said. "But we always believe in ourselves.

“Even though we went behind twice we believed we could win the game and showed that we've got great character in the team."

Rooney’s influence, epitomised in a simply delighted back heel to set up Van Persie to take the lead, was enough to garner supporters’ vote as Ashley Young (8%), Van Persie (7%) and Evra (4%) rounded off the top four.
