Older, wiser, still ready: Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes are sparingly used for Manchester United but always available

With more than half a century’s experience at Manchester United, both Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes are always ready to fight for the team when called upon.

Although the pair of midfield veterans have made limited appearances for the Reds this season, their experience has been a vital and often well-deployed trick of Sir Alex Ferguson’s.

And at 39 years old, the Welsh winger has had years to develop his game and ensure that his fitness is the best it can be for the moment he is needed.

“It is tough when you get yourself ready for a Wednesday game for example and you don’t play and you then have to get yourself ready for a Saturday game,” he told manutd.com.

“But it’s just a case of looking after your fitness and making sure you’re sharp and you’re not peaking in the middle of the week when you need to be prepared for a Saturday match.”

The country’s most-decorated footballer of all time has been forced in-field after losing out to Ashley Young, Nani, Antonio Valencia and occasionally Wayne Rooney on the wings.

But with more than 920 appearances in a United shirt to his name, Gigg’s is all too aware of what is required of him.

“A lot of players are in that position because we have a big squad and you’re not going to play every game,” he added.

“The likes of me and Scholesy probably play fewer matches than a lot of the players but we know we have to be ready when we’re called upon.”

Giggs has made 14 appearances for United this season while Scholes has added another 16 games to his career after last season’s 21 games following his return from retirement.
