Johnson disappointed by ‘dull’ Oldham defeat as Latics drop down League One table

Oldham Athletic manager Lee Johnson rued wasted chances after his side missed out on moving into the play-off places following a disappointing 1-0 loss to Barnsley.

The Yorkshire side scored with their first attack when Kane Hemmings got on the end of a Milan Lalkovic cross to poke the Tykes into a 12th minute lead.

Jonathan Forte squandered Oldham’s best chance late on when he failed to control after Brian Wilson’s cross found him unmarked, and so Latics’ boss Lee Johnson left Oakwell frustrated.

“It was a game of very few chances and it was a bit dull if I’m completely honest,” he said.

“They scored the goal which was disappointing from our point of view because it was their only decent chance of the game. It was an edgy game played on a not-so-great pitch.

“In fairness to Barnsley, they shut up shop after scoring and we had no answers.”

The 33-year-old was among the candidates for League One’s Manager of the Month for January, following a solid start to the year saw them pick up impressive wins against Fleetwood Town and Notts County.

But though Johnson’s side remain in touching distance of the coveted top six places in League One, they missed the chance to capitalise on their game in hand in a decidedly ‘dull’ game.

“It looked like a mediocre, mid-table clash and that’s disappointing when we were going for fifth,” he said.

“But we have had a good week. We just can’t go the extra mile when we need to pull out a result to get us somewhere.

“It could be a little bit of inexperience but they are learning and we are still well in the game.”
