Manchester welcomes Mock The Week star Gary Delaney – happy not to be ‘whoring himself out’… this time

Manchester is set to be ‘rolling with laughs’ as it opens its doors to comedy gold icon and writer Gary Delaney.

The Mock The Week star and husband of fellow comedian Sarah Millican will be making his first appearance tomorrow night at the Local Laugh event which is held every month.

Once again the evenings entertainment will be compéred by Manchester-born Justin Moorhouse and will also feature Mike Newall and Allyson Smith after a capacity crowd packed in to see last month’s show.

Speaking to MM, Gary revealed he has a soft spot for the Mancunian host, who he first met more than ten years ago.

“He’s a sweetie, and I seem to have become oddly camp for some reason,” he conceded.

“Gigs run by comics are usually the best as they know what it’s like to be on the stage, so they can run the night properly.

“A crowd tends to reflect the personality of its regular host, so this one should be funny and lovely.”

The award-winning comedian describes the Chorlton Irish Club as the ‘perfect’ venue for a number of reasons.

“North-West gigs are always fun and Irish gigs are fun, so I’m hoping this one will be ace,” he added.

“Middle size venues like this one are best – huge barns have no atmosphere, tiny rooms don’t have enough people. This is spot on, it is small enough to interact and big enough for rolling laughs.”

Alongside stand-up, Gary continues to write material for a number of high profile shows including Mock The Week, 8 Out of 10 Cats and Russell Howard’s Good News, but insists stand-up remains his forte.

“I’m a stand-up, who sometimes whores himself out for money by writing for other people,” he said.

“Stand-up is my first love – there’s nothing better than getting the reaction for your jokes yourself rather than watching someone else do them.”

And by a reaction, it is not always just laughs Gary thrives off.

“Mostly it’s just about trying to get a big laugh with every joke, but it’s also fun to try and get a disgusted groan or gasp every now and again with something naughty,” he said.

The 40-year-old has also had his say on the recent announcement that BBC3 is set to be pulled from television.

“It chops out the bottom rungs of the TV ladder for new programmes,” he admitted.

“There’s too big a gap between Radio and BBC2. I guess it’d be okay if BBC One and Two were now to take more risks, but I bet they won’t.”

Tickets, priced at £10, are still available for the event – for more details call: 0161 881 2898, or visit: https://www.ticketline.co.uk/order/tickets/13292659/bop-local-presents-laugh-local-chorlton-irish-club-2014-04-04-18-30-00
