Tameside Conservative stronghold falls to Labour in council elections for first time in 16 years

Tameside have seen a Conservative stronghold fall to Labour in the local council elections for the first time in 16 years.

Raja Miah, new Labour representative of Hyde Werneth, previously a Tory controlled ward, said: "We have proven that we are willing to roll up our sleeves.

"It has been a tough year for Hyde, but all I want is unity. I promise to be a councillor for all of Werneth."

Labour secured 1923 to the Conservatives 1470 votes.
