Two women remain in a critical condition and are fighting for their lives after a road traffic collision on the Northbound carriage way of the M61 in Manchester.

Police were called to the scene around 12.55am yesterday after a BMW 320 had smashed through the safety barrier and into a field alongside the motorway.

A 27-year-old woman and a 31-year-old woman were taken to Salford Royal Infirmary with life-threatening injuries where they remain in a critical condition.

A 31-year-old man was arrested for driving under the influence, but has since been de-arrested after being taken Manchester Royal Infirmary for observation having suffered serious but non life-threatening injuries.

Sergeant Mark Thomas of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “This was an extremely serious RTC that has resulted in two women fighting for their lives in hospital.

“We are asking that any witnesses, or anyone else with information, to call GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 0161 856 4741 as a matter of urgency.”
