A US presidential candidate will speak in Manchester tonight in an attempt to canvass support for his election bid and unify the Socialist movement between the US and Britain.

Jerry White, US Presidential Candidate for the Socialist Equality Party, has travelled to the city to speak about ‘the fight for the international unity of the working class’.

Mr White, who plans to stand against Barrack Obama and Mitt Romney at the forthcoming election, will discuss the international significance of the US elections and the SEP’s perspective for building a socialist movement for the international working class.

Mr White said: “The Socialist Equality Party has placed the fight for the international unity of the working class at the centre of our programme.”

The SEP seeks to empower the working classes ‘through the establishment of a workers’ government and the revolutionary transformation of world economy’.

Talking about the value of having a Socialist candidate for the Presidential election, Mr White stated that he and his running mate, Phyllis Scherrer, ‘are running to give voice to the working class’.

Supporter Dr Simon Whelan, a research lecturer based in the North, said today that the SEP seeks ‘common ownership’ and a ‘classless society’.

Dr Whelan said: “It is important Mr White is in Manchester because the younger generation don’t really know what Socialism is, and to highlight working class suffering across the board.”

Mr White’s speech in Manchester tonight is part of a worldwide tour which will also take in Germany and Sri Lanka.

He is contesting the election for the third time after having done so in 1996 and 2008. He has has previously criticised the Obama administration for its policy towards Wall Street which he claims works against the interests of the majority of American workers in favour of the privileged few.

Mr White is speaking tonight at 7 PM, The Mechanics Centre, The Main Hall, 103 Princess Street, Manchester, M1 6DD
