‘Perfect’ 10: Man City captain Kompany praises side’s Champions League display

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany has applauded Manchester City’s flawless performance after their 3-1 victory away to Sevilla on Tuesday night.

Wilfried Bony added to two goals in three first half minutes for Raheem Sterling and Fernandinho as City gained a victory that secured qualification to the Champions League knockout rounds.

Skipper Kompany was delighted to secure progress into the next round, and hailed the ‘perfect’ effort as City’s best performance in the Champions League to date.

“Our game plan was perfect today,” said Kompany.

“This was probably the best performance we’ve given in the Champions League so far. We defended solidly, won our aerial battles and were spot on all over the pitch.

“It’s an incredible achievement to have qualified with two games still to go and we now go on – it’s important for us to finish first in our group.”

City have endured mixed fortunes in the Champions League, having failed to escape the group stage in two of their last four campaigns.

But their victory in Spain maintained Manuel Pellegrini’s flawless record of reaching the knockout phase while managing City.

The City manager, taking charge of his 60th game in the competition, had spoken beforehand of his intention to play for all three points in Spain.

Therefore the Chilean adopted a different tactical approach, which allowed Yaya Toure, Fernandinho, Jesus Navas and Sterling to terrorise the hosts’ defence from behind lone-striker Bony.

After the match, Pellegrini praised the style of football his side played to secure progression into the next round of the Champions League.

“Today, we returned to our normal style of play and tried to dominate possession,” the Chilean manager said.

“We defended well too and dominated possession. I changed the system because I was not happy in the way were were playing against United and Norwich.

“We had prepared to play one-touch football and that was the reason we created so many chances.”
