By Tim Hyde

Mo Bros and Mo Sistas across Manchester showed off their facial hair for the final time last weekend as Movember came to a close.

Around 250,000 people in the UK helped raise more than £13million for Movember which will go towards helping men’s health issues across the world.

The month long campaign organised by the world’s largest men’s health charity was celebrated across the country at nine gala parties, including an awards ceremony at Manchester’s Gorilla.

JC, co-founder of Movember, said: “2013 has been an awesome year and another great campaign getting millions of people talking about these really important men’s health issues and raising vital funds.

“We’re humbled by the fact that we’ve had over a quarter of a million Mo Bros and Mo Sistas taking part in the UK alone – each and every one of our supporters is helping us achieve our vision of having an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health.”

Those that attended the gala’s fought for various awards including the prestigious Man of Movember crown as well as the Best Mo in Character, Team Mo, Mo Bro & Mo Sista, Lame Mo, Miss Movember and the Ultimate Mo.

The funds raised across the world will help tackle prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health challenges across the globe.

Since the charity’s conception in an Australian pub, in 2003, Movember has taken the world by storm and has created an annual movement that is slowly becoming tradition.

This year around 400 million people helped raise more than £310million in 21 different countries.

In the UK, Movember works with Prostate Cancer UK and The Institute of Cancer Research to ensure funds are targeted to the areas where they are needed most, helping to deliver the most effective health outcomes.

Prostate cancer is the most common form of the disease diagnosed in men in the UK as more than 40,000 men are diagnosed every year – which means every hour one man dies from prostate cancer.

Owen Sharp, Chief Executive of Prostate Cancer UK, said: “Movember is the largest non-government funder of prostate cancer research in the world and the charity has had a phenomenal impact on the way we research, treat and educate people about the dangers of prostate cancer.

“We’ve worked hand in hand with Movember as its UK men’s health partner for a number of years and we’re very proud of what we’ve achieved in that time – from funding dedicated health professionals across the country to investing unprecedented amounts in research.

“We thank each and every Mo Bro and Mo Sista for their dedication to bringing about a better future for men.”

This year Movember has been supported by a number of high profile celebrities, including Homeland star Damian Lewis, footballer Peter Crouch, England rugby stars Dylan Hartley and Tom Wood, actor David Suchet and comedians Adam Hills and David Schneider.
