Can't buy for girlfriend, boyfriend, in-laws or Secret Santa? Fear not, MM's SOS Christmas gift idea guide will help

‘Tis the season to be jolly but when it comes to gift giving Christmas can turn into the season to be miserable across Manchester

Each festive season we spend hours wading through store after store amongst thousands of other irritable shoppers only to return with gifts that nobody will like.

In fact, last year we spent £594million on unwanted Christmas presents with one in ten presents being tossed aside with the wrapping paper.

But never fear, the Christmas elves at MM have put together a SOS gift guide to help you. Whether it's for Secret Santa, the in-laws or that special someone in your life, we have something to ensure your presents won't end up on eBay by boxing day.

Secret Santa

The workplace tradition of Secret Santa can be the nightmare before Christmas. But you can avoid problems by following a few simple rules.

Firstly, keep it safe and stay away from controversy. The UK is notorious for giving gag gifts or cheeky surprises under the guise of anonymity which can make friends or co-workers feel uncomfortable. Swap the practical jokes for a relaxing bath time set from The Body Shop or the Keep Calm and Play On supporters kit from John Lewis to keep everyone happy.

Instead of panic buying last minute, take some time now to get to know their interests a bit better and look out for any clues that could point you perfect present. Once you know a bit more about them you could take a look through the selection at Calendar Club to find a 2013 calendar that would brighten their desk and will keep giving all year round.

The In-Laws

Whether it's your first Christmas with your partner’s family or your 21st, a poor choice of gift is unlikely to go down well. Practicality and flexibility are the best routes to choose when looking for a gift.

Cosy winter jumpers and smart leather gloves in their favourite colours can make for a thoughtful present and M&S stock a wide variety to choose from, regardless of your budget. If they are lovers of food and drink Whittard Teas have a fantastic selection of gifts or you could even buy some Great British Bake Off cooking equipment from Sainsbury's for the mother-in-law who loves to bake.

The Gentleman who has everything

Finding the special gift for the man in your life is often not an easy task, especially if they can't decide what they want for themselves in the first place. But here is a few ideas that should spark your imagination.

For a football fanatic, why not get him his own personalised history of his favourite team? You can even put your own message inside the hardback book for the ultimate gift. But be prepared for a few football stories at Christmas lunch.

If he's more comfortable on the couch than on the football pitch perhaps a gadget gift would be better suited. A cushion that doubles as a TV remote control could make the ideal present for someone who is constantly losing the flicker.

Or if he's simply a big kid then a remote control helicopter from MenKind should keep him happy for a few hours at least.

Gifts for Women

No doubt men across Manchester will be panicking come December 25 and hoping that what they've bought wont land them in the metaphorical dog-house (or actual dog-house if the present is particularly bad). Ease your worries now with these gifts.

First things first, if you're going to buy clothes or lingerie make sure it's the right size. Take a look in her wardrobe for style and size so you don't risk offending her with items that are too big or small. Elle Macpherson at House of Fraser has a range of pretty underwear and nightwear that will please you both this winter.

Go to a bit of trouble for her and personalise the gift. Something as small as the perfect photo frame with her favourite picture of the two of you can really show how much you care.

Or you could even book a free personalised shopping experience for her at McArthurGlen's Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet. A style consultant will ensure that she finds the perfect clothes and will make her feel like a leading lady.

If you still need help with preparing for Christmas http://www.cheshireoaksdesigneroutlet.com has an online Look Book to preview their range of the best Christmas gifts.
