Show racism the red card! Immigration film set to screen at Manchester’s National Football Museum

A new film that challenges misconceptions surrounding immigrants is set to screen at the National Football Museum in Manchester.

‘Immigration: What’s the Story?’ features accounts of people’s experiences of living and working in the UK as well testimonies from footballers including Gary Lineker, Jermain Defoe and Chris Smalling.

Show Racism the Red Card says its education workers increasingly hear racist attitudes expressed towards migrant and the film has been developed in response to this anti-immigration sentiment.

An accompanying video produced by Show Racism the Red Card:

Show Racism the Red Card Chief Executive, Ged Grebby said: “At SRtRC, we firmly believe that negative attitudes towards people are being shaped by the current political debate surrounding immigration and in particular the media’s coverage of the issue.

“In response to the approach from certain media outlets and some politicians, and the attitudes we have heard expressed in the classroom, SRtRC has developed a new educational film which can be used to combat some of the misinformation, disinformation, fear and scapegoating which currently frames the issue of immigration.

“The film uses the role model status of professional footballers and sports people alongside migrant voices from a variety of different backgrounds to explain the differences behind individual’s motivations for moving and to share human experiences of both prejudice and acceptance”

The special screening will be attended by former Bolton Wanderer and current Chief Executive of the Professional Footballers’ Association, Gordon Taylor OBE.

The event will be chaired by Paula Barker, Regional Convenor of UNISON North West.

The film will be screened on Tuesday, 8 December at 6pm at the National Football Museum in Manchester’s Urbis Building and is sponsored by the campaign’s supporters UNISON.
