MM’s top five Manchester City chants… from Niall Quinn’s disco pants to feeding the goat

By Alex Lanigan

From the dark days when Manchester City languished in the lower divisions of the football leagues to the dizzy heights of Premier League glory, Blues fans have a song for every occasion.

Few teams have had such a seismic transformation and as much misery and glory as the Blues in a short period of time.

One noticeable feature of the chants that echo around the Etihad are the self-deprecating style that has emerged from the some of the catastrophic results that the team has endured.

To honour the Citizens’ unique style and passion MM have compiled our top five favourite City chants.

5.) We never win at home…

We never win at home

and we never win away

We lost last week

and we lost today

We don’t give a f***

‘Cos we’re all p***** up

MCFC OK

City fans have had to endure some bleak moments in the not too recent past and had to endure countless defeats at some unglamorous locations.

Instead of being mocked by fans of the opposing team, the Blues decide to get ahead of the trend and poke fun at themselves.

This song has now become a regular at the Etihad as home fans show that they can remember the times when being a Manchester City fan was not as easy and did not involve trips to the Nou Camp in the Champions League.

4.) Feed the Goat…

Feed the Goat

Feed the Goat

Feed the Goat and he will score

Feed the Goat and he will score

Shaun Goater joined City as they were about to plummet to depths that the club had never sunk before.

Goater played a pivotal role in helping the Blues back to the Premier League and cemented his place as a City legend with two goals in the final Manchester derby at Maine Road, as the Blues ran out 3-1 winners.

To honour the Bermudian striker and his hefty appetite for goals, the Maine Road faithful created the chant that has seen a number of reincarnations, including Feed the Beast to honour summer signing Alvaro Negredo and the less popular Feed the Greek in reference to former Blue, Georgios Samaras.

3.) Blue Moon…

Blue Moon

You saw me standing alone

Without a dream in my heart

Without a love of my own

Blue Moon

Every club has its iconic song and Blue Moon is Manchester City’s.

No matter what the result, no matter what the weather, no matter where the fixture, City fans can be heard singing their anthem in support of their team.

Although it has featured in some classic movies like Grease and sung by legends of the musical world such as Elvis Presley, the out of tune version reverberating around the Etihad is probably the best version of the song.

2.) Niall Quinn’s disco pants

Niall Quinn’s disco pants are the best,

They go from his arse to his chest,

They’re better than Adam and the Ants,

Niall Quinn’s disco pants

The story of this chant begins on a pre-season trip to Penola, Itlay when the Irish striker was celebrating the success of Michael Carruth who had won the Gold medal at the Barcelona Olympics.

The striker then ended up having a boxing match with fellow Blue Steve McMahon and splitting McMahon’s nose.

Quinn then triumphantly went to a local bar sporting only a pair of cut-off jeans after losing his shirt in the fight with McMahon.

He was spotted by a group of City fans who soon treated the Irishmen to his new song.

Having left City to join Sunderland, Quinn had hoped to see the back of his song, but the song travelled to the North East with him. Sunderland fans embraced the song completely, and a group of fans even took to recording the song and releasing it as a single. The single climbed to number 59 in the charts in 1999.

1.)  Yaya and Kolo Toure song

Yaya and Kolo Toure song Sometimes the simple songs are the best. In honour of the Ivorian brothers who helped catapult City to their first title in 44 years, the Blues decided to create a song that has since taking football stadiums, festivals and nightclubs by storm.
