‘They’re our trophies to defend’: Wigan Warriors star Josh Charnley sets sights on defending cup double

By Scott Hunt

Josh Charnley believes his Wigan side are capable of having another good season and is determined to retain their Super League and Challenge Cup trophies.

The 22-year-old starred as Warriors claimed the double last season and was the top try-scorer in Super League.

Charnley believes the side is in the right shape to enjoy further success this season and aims to keep his hands on the silverware.

“They’re our trophies to defend,” Charnley said at the launch of Super League 2014 at Event City.

“The guys who have come in have bought into the culture of the club and the belief.

“It’s going to be a good season.”

Wigan travel to Australia to play NRL Premier Champions the Sydney Roosters on February 22.

As a result The Warriors kick off the season before anyone else and face the Huddersfield Giants, last season’s league leaders shield winners, on Friday at the DW Stadium.

Wigan have lost star-man Sam Tomkins from their squad from last season, with the England international moving to New Zealand Warriors.

They have brought in new additions however, with Australian Matty Bowen and Kiwi Eddy Pettybourne the most notable new arrivals.

With Tomkins moving on, Charnley may now take his place representing the club to the media, which is a role he says he will relish.

“I don’t mind getting my face out there a little bit more,” Charnley said.

“I do a lot of farm work so some people have asked if they can come up and film me at the farm.

“I wouldn’t mind doing it. It’s coming up to lambing season soon so it’s a pretty busy time.”

The Huddersfield game on Friday is a tough test against last season’s league winners and a side who beat Warriors home and away in the league last campaign.

Shaun Wane’s men will be keen to pick up two vital points against The Giants before they head to Australia aiming to win their first World Club Challenge since 1994.
