An explosion near a Walkden primary school has left three people injured and fire crews still tackling the blaze.

A call was made to Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) just after 2pm today when a diesel-powered industrial pressure washer caught fire on Harcourt Street, near North Walkden Primary School.

Three people are reported to have suffered injuries – a 54-year-old male suffered facial burns while a 31-year-old male suffered burns to the face and chest.

Both men have been taken to Wythenshawe Hospital by Air Ambulance, while another man has been taken to Salford Royal Hospital.

Four fire crews attended the scene – three fire engines, from Farnworth and Bolton Central fire stations, and a support unit.

Incident commander for the fire Paul Smitham said: “We hope that the people injured make a speedy recovery from this.

“Our crews worked hard at the scene to bring the fire under control and with the help of partners we were able to minimise disruption to the community.

“We will be looking into what caused the fire.”
