The Andy Gray Column: Manchester City will finally clinch Premier League title after conservative United lose crown

Manchester City fans celebrating the title after beating United might have been a bit hasty, but I think they will be able to finally pop the champagne this Sunday.

Sir Alex Ferguson has come in for a bit of stick for what he did in the Manchester derby and while I wasn’t surprised with the formation, I was a little surprised with his starting XI.

I was surprised that he didn’t play Antonia Valencia after the form he has been in and perhaps that Danny Welbeck didn’t start because he has been their best goal threat for a while.

But I wasn’t surprised with the line-up of 4-5-1. It’s a line-up Sir Alex uses a lot particularly with away European sides where he likes to bolster the midfield and play Rooney up front on his own.

The problem was United never really got out the traps. They played very conservatively, they were overly cautious I felt.

They played like a side intent on not getting beat rather than a side who were intent on winning and I don’t think anyone, apart from the most biased United fan, would say that City didn’t deserve to win the game on the night.

But my message for City fans would be that it is far from over and this Sunday’s trip to Newcastle will be a very tough game.

Roberto Mancini and David Platt went to Stamford Bridge on Wednesday to watch Newcastle and would be have been very impressed by the way they went about their work – especially Papiss Cisse.

But they’re not unbeatable and although it is Newcastle’s last home game and they’ll want to sign off at home with a win to really end a magnificent season for the Toon Army with Champions League football, there’s a bigger prize awaiting Manchester City and these chances don’t come along every year and when they do they have to grab them.

So I still think City will practically seal the title with victory at Newcastle this weekend and the blue half of Manchester will be able to finally have their moment in the sun.
