On a roll: Oldham roller derby girls hope to rule the North in round robin tournament

Oldham’s all-female roller derby team are gearing up to be crowned champions of the North.

Rainy City Roller Girls will take on Middlesbrough Milk Rollers (MMR) at The Thunderdome in the second stage of The Northern Series on Saturday September 27.

The side secured a 78–14 victory against Leeds Roller Dolls last month in their first bout of the regional competition and remain the most successful team in Lancashire, ranking fifth in the UK.

Team captain Fay Roberts told MM: “The Northern series is a great opportunity for the highest-ranked teams in the north of England to play each other and strengthen the roller derby scene in the North.

“MMR are a team that I have wanted to play for a while now. They have a fierce reputation and a lot of talented skaters.

“We have been training really hard for this next game and I’m really looking forward to skating with my fantastic team.”

The Northern Series was created to bring together some of the most successful roller derby teams in the North, all ranking within the top 10 in the UK and will use a set scoring system similar to football.

Leeds Roller Dolls will take on Newcastle Roller Dolls on the same night and all four teams will gain three points for a win with an extra point if the score differential is over 100.

Each squad will play a total of three games over the series, against each team, before the final in November.

Tickets: £8 in advance / £10 on the door. Under-14s free when accompanied by an adult.
