A woman was killed in a bus smash in Wigan this morning and officers are quizzing a man on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

The woman – believed to be in her 30s – was pronounced dead at the scene after the collision on Platt Bridge at around 8.45am.

Emergency services were unable to save the victim’s life after the bus ploughed into the woman.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: “Part of Platt Street has been closed while the incident is dealt with.

“The driver of the bus has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.”

The road remains closed as officers continue their investigations and motorists are urged to avoid the area if possible.

Witnesses are asked to call the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 0161 856 4741.
