Manchester City assistant manager David Platt paid tribute to Marcos Lopes for his part in City’s convincing FA Cup third round win against Watford.

Lopes was introduced with five minutes remaining and went on to score with one of his first touches to help the Premier League champions into the draw for the fourth round.

The 17-year-old attacking midfielder signed from Benfica in 2011 and is tipped as the next big City star.

“He’s [Lopes] got a big smile on his face at the moment, I can tell you that,” Platt said of the Portuguese native.

“He should be proud of what he’s done but equally he should be up tomorrow and ready to train hard which he will be because he’s got a good temperament and he won’t let this go to his head.

“He came away with us on pre-season and did very, very well, he’s a very technical footballer, you can see that he wants to go and hurt the opposition.”

Platt praised the sides performance in a game that never looked out of City’s control, but felt it was not really over until Lopes scored in stoppage time.

“In the end it was straightforward, we’re pleased with the result,” Platt said, “We didn’t get the third goal that really finished it off until right at the end.

“That second goal just before half-time really takes the stuffing out of them and that second half we controlled the way the game was going to be played.

“Goals change games, we went 1-0 up and if we had conceded straight away when they had the one-on-one chance, you never know how it might have gone.”
