Amir Khan’s dream of lucrative Las Vegas bout with Mayweather dealt blow by fans in online ‘fight poll’

By Arandeep Singh Dhillon

Amir Khan’s hopes of a super-fight with unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr have been dealt a massive blow by boxing fans.

Pound-for-pound king Mayweather had asked fans around the world to vote on who he should face next – Khan or Argentinian Marcos Maidana – but the Bolton-born boxer has only received 20% of votes.

The Olympic silver medallist was touted for a lucrative Las Vegas showdown with the outspoken American on May 3 and was backed by Stockport’s Ricky ‘The Hitman’ Hatton.

Earlier this week Hatton told Talksport’s Drivetime: “I do give Khan a chance. I know a lot of people won’t share my enthusiasm, and he will be the underdog, there’s no getting away from that.

“But if Amir can swallow his pride for one fight and use his hand speed and his boxing ability and let Floyd try to jump all over him, he’s probably the only man who can match Floyd for skill.

“Mayweather likes to sit back and use his defense; he can shoulder roll and all that, but his style is harder (to get right) when he’s on the front foot. Amir has got the style to give him big headaches.”

Maidana was defeated by Khan in 2011 but carried out a superb destruction of showman Adrien Broner in December to launch him back into the spotlight and now looks set to face Mayweather.
