Making a change: Manchester model lands award nomination for flying diversity flag in fashion industry

Exclusive by Kim Richards

A Manchester-based model who developed her own company after becoming concerned at the lack of ethnic diversity in the fashion industry is nominated for an award for her efforts.

Cliché Model Management was born from Melissa Drummond’s concerns of a lack of multi-racial models represented in the industry, and aims to race the profile of black and ethnic models.

Melissa, who created the company last July, is recognised for the Race, Faith and Religion Award which will be handed out at the National Diversity Awards this September.

Melissa said: “I am honoured and privileged to be nominated. It means so much to be recognised for an award such as this.

“At Cliché Model Management we aim to celebrate people who are different, whether it is in their race, height or age.

“We are currently in the process of selecting models and for my company to be recognised for the award will help to increase the profile across the UK dramatically.

“The nomination is very exciting for me and hope that my company can build on this and increase our profile nationally.”

Famous Mancunians set to attend include X Factor alumni Misha B, who is acting as a patron alongside Paralympic champion Jody Cundy.

Manchester hosted the event last year, but the reins were handed over to Leeds for the 2013 ceremony.

CEO of the National Diversity Awards Paul Sesay said: “These awards are for people who inspire other individuals through their work, through their commitment to helping others, through their infectious personalities and through adversity.

“It is often said that people never realise how much they have influenced an individual, a community or even an entire nation, and it is through these people’s vision that makes this world a better place.

“This year alone we have received an overwhelming amount of nominations, unfolding the journeys of our most influential people and charities that work at the core of our communities, but often go unnoticed in mainstream society.”
