Jonny Evans stews over mystery display as Manchester United fall flat against Chelsea

By Chris Bailey

Jonny Evans admits there was something not quite right about Manchester United’s performance after the champions fell to Chelsea in the penultimate home game of the season.

The Northern Ireland international partnered Nemanja Vidic at the back and could only look on as Juan Mata found the net late on – via a deflection off Phil Jones.

Though United secured their 20th league title against Aston Villa two weeks ago, Evans insists the dressing room is as frustrated as ever over defeat.

“It’s hard to put my finger on why we weren’t up to our normal standards,” Evans told MUTV.

“We’ve had a hectic couple of weeks but Chelsea have been our rivals and we’re disappointed not to get three points against them.

“Maybe they had more intensity in their play because they are pushing for a Champions League spot. I think they deserved their victory in the end.”

The Red Devils will aim make amends at Old Trafford next week as they take on Capital One Cup winners Swansea City in their final home game.

Celebrations are guaranteed with the presentation of the Premier League trophy, and Evans is adamant his side will put on a good show for the occasion.

“It will be a big day for us and we want to win that game,” he added. “It’s then the last game of the season against West Brom and we want to win that as well.

“We want to win every game and, going into these last two games, I’m sure the lads will be up for it and we want to make sure we put on a good performance for the fans.”
