Greater Manchester parks in frame for national award

Voting has now begun to find the best park in the UK.

A total of 364 parks have been nominated with 55 of the nominations being in the North West alone.

And here in Greater Manchester, entries include Alexandra Park in Oldham and Etherow Country Park in Stockport.

The voting will run from today to the 19th August 2019.

Once the votes have been counted, the parks with the highest votes will from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will be shortlisted.

The winner will then be announced in Mid-September.

The competition will started in 2015 has since had three overall winners – Telford’s Towen Park in 2015, Rouken Glen Park in Glasgow in 2016 and Blackpool’s Stanley Park in 2017.

The competition is run by the Fields in Trust which has helped protect and preserve green spaces across the country since 1925.

The launch day also coincides with the charities nationwide “have a field day” which seeks to engage people with over 250 events promoting their local parks.

Fields in Trust Chief Executive Helen Griffith has highlighted the importance of parks in the UK are a “vital” part of infrastructure.

She said: “We know that they provide benefits to the physical health, mental wellbeing and community connections for people that use them.

“Fields in Trust is committed to protecting these valuable and much-loved parks and green spaces for future generations to enjoy.”
