Twitter users red card retiring ref Howard Webb… dubbing him Manchester United’s ‘pen pal’

Howard Webb retired from refereeing today sparking a stream of posts from Twitter users branding the officiator a ‘Manchester United legend’.

The former police officer turned referee drew criticism during his 11-year spell in the Premier League for his supposed favouritism of United.

Webb notably awarded more penalties to the club (nine) than any other in his career.

The best of the testimonials included Footy Humour’s claim that Webb retired so he could “spend more time with his family,” along with an attached photo of him with a family of Fergies.

FAS Football went for an image of United fans’ apparent dismay following Webb’s decision to step down.

But perhaps the best of the bunch was Troll Football’s image of Webb after supposedly signing for the Red Devils, captioned “Manchester United legend Howard Webb has retired as a match referee.”

Adored though he was at United, don’t expect to see a statue of Webb outside Old Trafford anytime soon.
