Men armed with claw hammer rob security guard at Whitefield Metrolink station during rush hour

By Danielle Wainwright

Two men armed with a claw hammer and a wrench robbed a security guard collecting money from a Whitefield tram station ticket machine on Tuesday while commuters were travelling to work.

The thugs approached the cash-in-transit guard at around 8.45am when he was collecting takings from two ticket machines at Besses o’ the Barn Metrolink station.

The men then made threats of violence and demanded the cash box which the guard handed over before fleeing in the direction of Thatch Leach Lane.

The cash was later recovered nearby.

Detective Constable Martin Brown said: “The victim of this robbery was threatened with violence by the offenders who were wielding hammers.

“It is vital that those responsible are brought to justice.

“The robbery was committed in broad daylight and there would have been a lot of people around going about their daily business.

“I would urge anyone who was in the area at the time who may have seen two men fleeing the tram stop or who knows anything about what happened to contact police.”

The men are described as white men aged in their late teens or early 20s and slim. One man was wearing a grey hooded top and matching trousers. His hood was pulled up and he wore a black scarf around his face.

The other man was wearing a dark coloured top and dark tracksuit bottoms. He also had his hood up and wore a scarf around his face.

Anyone with information should call police on 0161 856 8165 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
