Manchester Giants v USA select: Giants return to the court as new season nears

The Manchester Giants will take to the court for the first time since the end of the 2014/15 season with a pre-season friendly at the Lucozade Powerleague Trafford Sportsdome against a USA select touring side on Sunday.

The Giants will be looking to enhance their preparations for the news season, beginning Sunday September 20 against Cheshire Phoenix, in which they will hope to improve on last year’s ninth-place finish, which saw them miss out on the play-offs by one position.

This time last year the Giants played a fixture against another US Select side made up of past American college graduates looking for contracts in Europe.

On that occasion the Giants were narrowly beaten 81-82 in their first game at the Trafford Sportsdome, so will be hopeful of a victory to boost their preparations for the new season this time around.

This year’s game will mark the first opportunity for fans to see a selection of the Giants new summer signings, which include some familiar faces.

They are led by Manchester-born guard Callum Jones, one of the clubs key man last term, who has played in all three of the Giants’ campaigns since the club’s return to the top flight in 2012.

Player/coach Yorick Williams also has his side boosted by the acquisition of former Manchester Magic forward Nathan Schall, who had a brief spell with the Giants in the 2012/13 season

Two more former Manchester Magic men also look to make their debuts: Nigerian-born Usman Baba, and guard Arnold Emelone; alongside former Lancashire Spinners and Huddersfield guard Chris Hodkin.

Giants CEO John Dwan has praised Yorick’s additions, particular Callum Jones, and the work he has put in preparing for the season.

Dwan said: “Yorick has been working hard over the last couple of weeks and has looked at a lot of players.

“We are delighted to see Callum back at the club, he has made a big contribution to what we achieved so far.

“And we welcome back Nathan and some new blood as well.”

The Giants face the USA Select touring side on Sunday, September 6 (7pm).

Ticket prices are: Adults £10; Juniors £6; Concessions £7; Family £25; Under-5s free. Tickets are available on the Manchester Giants Website and on the door.
